Who We Are

Future Plans

Our future plans fall into three areas: (1) training opportunities; (2) research; and (3) technology development. They are all related, and to some extent build upon each other.

1. Training opportunities: we are very interested in developing training opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students, and for others who may be interested in public health informatics but not in a degree.

  • At the undergraduate and graduate levels we will begin offering coursework on health education / health promotion and the role of advanced communications technologies. These courses will be intended to provide an overview of the opportunities for health educators to utilize technology in their work.
  • We are also looking to the possibility of developing pre- and post-doctoral training programs in public health informatics.
  • Finally, we are in the process of developing a Public Health Informatics Graduate Certificate program.

2. Research: as we move forward we will begin describing a public health informatics research agenda that includes testing the extent to which technologies are useful in different health education interventions. As part of that agenda we are particularly interested in examining important research issues -- such as how to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of health education interventions with different populations; and, how to address public policy and practice issues related to the digital divide and the impact it may have on health outcomes.

3. Technology development: as part of our training and research efforts, we will continue to develop specific applications as described elsewhere in this site.
